Fall 2008 Isidore Update
As many of you may already know Isidore, the replacement to our current Learning Management System WebCT, was launched this fall. This semester, 18 instructors are teaching 22 courses across numerous disciplines inside Isidore. The first two months of the semester have been a success. Since Isidore is an open source product, the E-Learning lab, with guidance from the pioneer instructors, has been able to customize the appearance and toolset to best fit the needs of the UD community. Small hiccups were encountered and corrected, new features were requested and implemented, and UD is two months closer to having an LMS that suits our needs.

It has been the plan from the start to offer evaluation sites for all interested faculty midway into the semester. Evaluation sites will allow faculty members to experience Isidore hands-on. While the first semester was limited to a small group of faculty, in the spring semester Isidore will be open for general use. It is our hope that faculty will request and test their evaluation sites during the fall semester, deciding if they wish to teach in Isidore in spring.

How do I learn to use Isidore?
The E-Learning lab will offer hands-on Isidore training sessions over. The sessions will last two hours and will be aimed at acquainting faculty with the Isidore system. The training will be held:
  • Wednesday, November 5th from 9:00-11:00 AM
  • Thursday, November 6th from 1:30-3:30 PM

If you would like to register for one of these training sessions please contact Lora Butcher at lora.butcher@notes.udayton.edu or 229-3309. Space is limited to 10 faculty members per session and will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. The E-Learning Lab will also be publishing a training video online.
FAQ
  • Why do we have to migrate in the first place? WebCT has been working for me just fine.
    • The move away from WebCT was inevitable. The version of WebCT UD is currently utilizing was released in 2002 and support for this version is drawing to a close. Also, the acquisition of WebCT by Blackboard ensured there is no simple upgrade. The move to Isidore was recommended by a faculty committee last year. Learn the history behind that decision here.
  • When will I be able to request sites on Isidore for the spring semester?
    • Faculty will be able to begin requesting spring Isidore sites on December 15th. A reminder email will be sent to faculty on this date.
  • Will I be able to transfer content I develop in my evaluation to my spring site when it’s created?
    • Yes. If you develop content in your evaluation site you will be able to transfer that content to your spring site(s).
  • Will I be able to easily transfer content from my WebCT site to my Isidore site for the spring semester?
    • There will not be an automated process in place for the spring semester to transfer an entire WebCT course into Isidore. There will, however, be processes in place, with assistance from the E-Learning lab, to transfer Content Modules and Quizzes to Isidore. The E-Learning lab will continue working throughout the spring and summer semesters to develop a more complete migration tool for faculty.
  • How can I learn more about Isidore if I’m not ready to begin using a site right now?
    • The E-Learning lab will be hosting four informational sessions very soon. The session will last one hour each and will discuss the system, our experiences so far, and the future timeline. The E-Learning lab will answer any questions faculty have as they prepare to migrate from WebCT.
Those sessions will be held on the following dates in LTC TeamSpace:
Thursday, October 30th from 12:00-1:00 PM
Wednesday, November 5th from 9:00-11:00 AM
Thursday, November 6th from 1:30-3:30 PM
Friday, November 14th from 12:00-1:00 PM
If you would like to register for one of these training sessions please contact Lora Butcher at lora.butcher@notes.udayton.edu or 229-3309. Space is limited to 10 faculty members per session and will be filled on a first come, first serve basis.
  • How much longer will WebCT be available?
    • WebCT is scheduled to be phased out at the end of the fall 2009 semester. However, faculty will still be able to teach inside of WebCT during the fall 2009 semester. It is the E-Learning Lab’s hope that faculty will begin to migrate their content and use the new system over the spring, summer, and fall semesters of 2009.
  • Can I expect the same tools and level of sophistication with Isidore?
    • Yes. Isidore not only carries the same functionality but much more.
  • What Tools are Included?
    • There are currently 12 tools available for instructors to use in Isidore. The list will grow each year as needs arise and development continues. A testing tool will be added for instructors to use in the spring 2009 semester.
      The core tools are:
      Syllabus Schedule Announcements
      Assignments Modules Gradebook
Web Content Tool News Feeds Resources
      Messages Forums Chat
  • Will I be able to utilize a textbook publisher e-Pack in Isidore?
    • It depends on what publisher you are working with. As you may recall textbook publishers offer their e-Packs in multiple formats and often times Sakai is not one of them. But more publishers offer Sakai compatible content each year.
