WebCT Basic FAQ
What is WebCT?
WebCT, which stands for Web Course Tools, is a learning management system (LMS) that enables instructors to create and manage web-based learning activities and course materials. WebCT can be used to supplement face-to-face instruction or to deliver complete courses on the Web using an ordinary web browser. Some of the WebCT course tools include a bulletin board, chat room, whiteboard, email, assignment drop box, grade book, quizzing tools, interactive calendar, and tools for incorporating and linking content.

WebCT can also integrate a variety of software applications such as PowerPoint, Acrobat (PDF files), images, spreadsheets, and QuickTime movies to create a multimedia learning environment.

The University of Dayton is currently using WebCT version 4.1. WebCT was first introduced on campus in the spring of 2003.

When are courses available?
Instructors have access to a WebCT site as soon as it's created and maintain this access for approximately one year. For example, instructors can access Winter 2007 courses until the end of December 2007 (at which point Winter 2008 courses are created).

Please read the WebCT policy Statement before requesting a course.

Do I have to request a WebCT site every semester?
Yes. You need to request a WebCT site for every course that you would like to offer in WebCT each semester. The E-Learning lab doesn't create course sites on the assumption that professors will need WebCT sites created because their class was taught using WebCT last year/semester.

Generally speaking professors should request WebCT sites for the upcoming semester one month before the class is to begin.

What is the difference between a DEV site and an Active site?
The first time an instructor requests a WebCT site a development(DEV) site accesible only to the instructor is automatically created. This site is a place to develop content and test tools. DEV site content is copied into an Active site when the Active site is created.
