Course Management
How does navigation work within WebCT sites?

Navigating WebCT course sites is easy. Using the 'breadcrumb' menu system you can easily see the path you took to arrive at a resource and jump back to specific pages.

No matter where you are in the WebCT site, you can always return to beginning by clicking on 'Homepage'.

How do I modify the Course Menu items?

Have you just noticed that you have old links that you would like to remove from your course menu? Would you like to switch the order of the links?

Remember, you can edit the course menu items by navigating to: Homepage > Control Panel > Course Settings and click on

Note: Deleting an icon on the 'Homepage' will not remove the corresponding link on the 'Course Menu'. You will need to remove the item in both spots.

How do I move items in WebCT?

Nothing in WebCT is set in stone. If you don't like the way something is arranged use the following buttons to change the layout of your content. Icons can be shifted, copied, or moved from an organizer page to fit your liking.

The picture on the left side of the buttons above indicates that you need to select a radio button before the action can be completed.

Can I use files I created outside of WebCT?
Of Course! Most professors already have the files they use in their classes such as the class syllabus, assignment sheet, or class resources created. These files can be in Word, PowerPoint, or PDF format. That is perfectly fine because WebCT doesn't make you reinvent the wheel. WebCT is built to accept outside content and make it accessible. You simply need to upload the files that currently reside on your computer to the WebCT server before they can be used on the site. This process is very similar to adding an attachment to an email. To upload files into your WebCT to be used later you can navigate to: Homepage > Control Panel > Manage Files and click on

You can upload files one at time but be sure and pay attention to where you are uploading them to so you can find them later.

Once the files are uploaded you can add them to your course for student access through an array of WebCT tools including: Single Pages, the Syllabus tool, Content Modules, or Assignments.

What does it mean to 'Update Student View'?
If you are adding course material, such as a class PowerPoint file, to a Content Module in your site you need to remember to click the button followed by the button on the following screen. Without completing this sequence after adding new content, your students won't be able to access the resources.

Why would I 'Hide' a tool?
Hiding tools is an effective strategy that allows professor's to develop parts of their course or familiarize themselves with new tools without the students being able to see what they are doing. When the tool is finished being configured, the professor can reveal it for students to access.

To Hide or Reveal a tool:

  1. Click on the "Radio Button" beside the tool you wish to hide/reveal
  2. On the Action Panel choose or

Can I re-use a WebCT site from a previous semester?
Yes. In fact, this is a common approach among instructors that use WebCT to avoid re-creating course materials that remain relevant from semester to semester.

By default we use the DEV course as the template for new courses. Professors are advised to back-up and move the content from their 'active' sites to their 'DEV' sites at the end of each semester. The E-Learning lab can help you with this step if necessary. The next two entries walk through backing-up and restoring a course.

How do I back-up my WebCT Site?
It is always a good idea to back-up your course at the end of a semester, if not more frequently. Each WebCT is allowed 3 back-up files. Creating a back-up ensures the data is protected and available in the format the faculty member has already taken the time to build the next time they request the same course on WebCT. The steps to create a back-up file are simple.
  1. Once logged into WebCT, click on the 'Course Functions' button at the top of the screen (i.e. - your MyWebCT page).
  2. Place a checkmark in the box next to the course that will be backed-up. For this example we'll assume ENG 110 - Section 1 course.
  3. Next, click on 'Backup courses' on the right side of the page.
    1. This will take everything from the live ENG 110 section and back it up in one convenient file that can be easily restored a variety of places if necessary.
    2. The course back-up can be given a description if desired, but it's not necessary. Some users like to give it a descriptive name to remind them when they backed up their course such as: "Backup taken after midterm exam. It doesn't include assignment #4 submissions."
  4. Finally, click 'Create'to begin the backup process.
    1. It may take a few minutes but can be as short as 10-20 seconds.
    2. Once the process is complete a message is displayed indicating the backup was a success. Press 'Continue'.
That's it! You have successfully backed up your course!

How do I restore my WebCT Site?
In the previous example a back-up was taken of an ENG 110 course. Once a back-up is taken the next step is to restore the file into its corresponding DEV site where the course material can be revised and further developed while the class is not being taught.
  1. Once logged into WebCT, click on the 'Course Functions' button at the top of the screen (i.e. - your MyWebCT page).
  2. Place a checkmark to the left of the backup that was previously created. The backup file will be named something similar to: 06_FA_ENG_110_01_Nov27_1137.zip (backup). The filename contains the date on which it was created.
  3. Next, click 'Restore backup' on the right side of the page.
  4. The page will then refresh. Now place a checkmark next to the course the back-up file will be restored to. In this example, a checkmark will be placed next to the ENG 110 -DEV course.
  5. The final step is to decide how to handle the embedded user accounts in the class being restored. The most common selection is to "Keep Users." This restores class content but doesn't carry over the users accounts or user files (Make sure and read the options carefully, especially when restoring a back-up in an 'active' site. If unsure of the best option, please contact the E-Learning lab for support).
    1. The restore process will take a few moments to complete.
    2. Once complete the content that was the live ENG 110 site is copied to its DEV site where it can be kept forever and used to build future sections of the course on WebCT. The same content should now be in both the ENG 110 active site and the DEV site.
Congratulations! The back-up file has been properly restored to a DEV site.
